Education is not - and should never be - mere knowledge transmission.
Guided by this belief, our journey began in Kerala, a state known for its progressive education policies and commitment to inclusive, high-quality learning. Over the years, Kerala's education policies have moved beyond traditional rote-based learning, embracing transformative pedagogies that cultivate critical thinking and social awareness. The Kerala Curriculum Frameworks (2007, 2023) emphasize the need for critical pedagogy - a dialogue-based pedagogic approach with a focus on empowering students to critically analyze their social structures and cultivate a commitment to social justice. However, a significant gap exists between policy and practice as teachers and school leaders do not have the necessary support to cultivate the practical knowledge and tools to effectively integrate these approaches in schools and classrooms.
At Sahapaadi, we bridge this gap. Partnering with the public education system, we research and co-create knowledge to transform schools and classrooms into spaces of dialogic learning, where students don’t just absorb information but critically engage, reflect, and shape the world around them.
Partnering with teachers to co-create and implement teaching practices that foster dialogic learning classrooms
Partnering with schools and communities to develop teaching and learning materials that are context-driven and foster dialogic learning
Partnering with school principals to cultivate school cultures that actively nurtures and sustains dialogic learning
Disseminating research findings to inform government policies and contribute to broader educational conversations
Krupa Anilkumar
Krupa believes that the true purpose of education is to nurture students into curious, agentic, empathetic, and socially responsible individuals. An engineer by training, she has an M.A. in Education from Azim Premji University, Bangalore. Her vision of a gender-just world led her to undertake the action research project, Dialogue-Based Pedagogy for the Gender Education of Pre-service Teachers, under the Early Career Researcher funding program of Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures (TESF), India. The insights and experiences gained through this research became instrumental in shaping the core values and approach of Sahapaadi. They now form the foundation of its vision for transformative and inclusive education.
Kurien Philip
Kurien's journey into education began after completing his law degree from Gujarat National Law University and practicing as an advocate for two years. His growing interest in the philosophies of prominent education thinkers led him to transition into the field of education. Inspired by the potential of individuals and communities to critically and collaboratively reflect and transform their lived realities, Kurien decided to pursue an M.A. in Education at Azim Premji University, Bangalore. It was the conversations and explorations during this period that deepened his understanding and ultimately lead to co-founding Sahapaadi with Krupa.
